21st-Century Parenting
Submitted by Overbooked on Tue, 06/30/2009 - 2:15pm
As if raising children wasn’t already vexing enough, parenting in the new millennium presents its unique concerns. The “green” movement, the cellular society and the increase in childhood obesity are a few of these new hurdles parents must face. The Richland County Public Library has some recent books that address these issues and more... Rachael Ray is in touch with the modern family’s need to cook quick and easy but healthy meals together. Her new cookbook Yum-O! is perfect for the millennium family. Also check out Generation XL, which offers healthy recipes and ideas to get kids off the couch and moving.
An interesting tidbit I learned from The Green Baby was that children as young as 18 months old can recognize brands! Cutting back, reusing and recycling can set a good example for our little consumers.
And if that wasn’t enough for parents to worry about, there is the growing phenomenon of tech-savvy kids whose texting and computing skills baffle their parents. Get up to speed with the book Logged On and Tuned Out: A Nontechie’s Guide to Parenting a Tech-Savvy Generation.
Also check out the Web sites listed below for information from other parents and developmental experts. It never hurts to be informed!

The Green Baby sounds really interesting - I can't believe babies can recognize brands at 18 months!
