Black Music Month 2009

This will be the fifth year that RCPL has commemorated Black Music Month with special live performances that are free-of-charge.

President Jimmy Carter designated June as Black Music Month in 1979. This year we look at positive hip-hop with a performance on June 16 by local artist Sheem-One and the blues via a performance on June 23 by South Carolina’s legendary “blues doctor” Drink Small.  Each performance will take place at 7 p.m. in the Bostick Auditorium at Main. Check out this clip from one of our 2008 performances:

Also remember to visit 1431 to find audio and video recordings from various genres of music including hip-hop and blues.  You will also find several resources that highlight the contributions of African-Americans to our music culture.

Don’t have time to come to the library? Check out this wonderful online database from home!

African-American Song is the first online resource to document the history of African-American music in an online listening service, and the library makes it available to you absolutely free.

Please call us at 929-3457 if you have questions.
