Bringing Home a New Bird

People accustomed to cats and dogs need patience with a pet bird's adaptation. They don't always come home as instant companions. Most cage birds in the stores are parrot varieties such as parakeets and lovebirds, among others. Parrots are not domesticated like cats and dogs. They are wild animals from the rainforest or grasslands with their instincts and natural behavior still intact. Hand-fed and tamed baby birds can be bought from breeders but are still reactive to a change in environment. My seven-week-old baby birds did not chirp for two days. In the aviary they were born two days apart in age. When appropriate, they were removed from their cages so that the shopping public could handle them. These two birds, a lovebird and parakeet, were already acquainted.

My birds were tame enough to be handled by members of the public in a retail store but were bashful when taken out of their first and only environment. They had been with me for five days when they shared a cage for a trip to the mountains. It is helpful when you acquire a new bird to have the cage(s) set up and ready for the pet's occupancy. That makes the bird's transfer to his cage less stressful.
(And perhaps yours, too!)
