Dress to Impress: How to Wow Them at the Interview (Part 1)

So let’s imagine a scenario in which you’ve gone through the application process, gotten that callback and now you have an interview set up! Panic time right? Wrong! This is the first installment of how to successfully complete the in-person interview, starting with your look. In a perfect world, it would be all about your skills and qualifications and the fact that you can do the job awesomely. But appearance does matter in the professional arena. It matters a lot. You will be evaluated on your personality, skills, and appearance.

First of all, research the company’s dress code policy. You may be able to locate this information on their website. In fact, it’s best to go ahead and ask what the policy is before you even go in to interview. This way you won’t have to do any guesswork. This is a perfectly acceptable thing to ask the hiring manager when you’re in contact with them about an interview. You’re showing interest in company standards and fitting in at their operation. The company could be a casual one and showing up decked out in a suit could possibly make a bad impression. In that scenario, you would want to have a laid-back appearance. The way in which you dress is contingent on the industry you’re working in. It really all depends. There is no standard way to dress. The “safe” bet is a skirt and blazer for the ladies and slacks and a tie for the fellas.  But depending on your industry, playing it safe may not be the best thing to do. In fact, sometimes taking a risk pays off. Do your research. Here are a few sites that will give you an idea of where to start planning. Monster has a particularly helpful page that separates dress by industry.
