eBooks on the iPad & iPhone
Submitted by Hassie on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 1:06pm
It is now possible to get library eBooks on an iPad or an iPhone. I first read about this from a cnet article "Bluefire Reader brings free public-library ebooks to iOS."
Bluefire Productions is a small, Seattle-based software company that has developed a reader application that can be loaded onto an iPhone or iPad and will read ebooks that can be downloaded for free from the library (browse eBook fiction or nonfiction by genre in the far left column). It is necessary to have a Richland County Public Library card and pin before downloading. Library cards are free for all residents of Richland County and can be obtained at any Richland County Library location. OverDrive, the library's current eBook provider, is set to release it's ebook app for iPhone in December 2010. Apps for iPad and Android should be released soon after. (I sure hope so!) These new applications (once released) will allow iPad, iPhone and Android users to download library ebooks wirelessly (or, direct to device). As of today (Wednesday, 12/01/10), all library ebooks must be downloaded to a computer and then transferred to a portable reader (plug in reader, drag and drop file, etc...).
Library eBooks are currently compatible with the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble nook, Kobo eReader, Literati Reader, and Pandigital Novel. The Amazon Kindle is currently not compatible with library eBooks.
Contact the library by email or give 1431 staff a ring at 803-929-3450 if you have further questions.

As of this week, the updated Overdrive app is available for devices running iOS 4.0 and higher: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/overdrive-media-console/id366869252?mt=8 I haven't been able to use it since iOS 4 isn't available for the 1st-generation iPod touch, but I'm excited about the idea of downloading library ebooks directly to devices, without having to deal with the middlemen of a computer and Adobe Digital Editions.
