Fitness for Children and Teens
Submitted by Rosemary on Tue, 07/07/2009 - 4:33pm
You’ve likely seen on the news or read in the paper that today’s youths have higher rates of obesity than children just 10-20 years ago. These youths are at a greater risk for a variety of health risks, including diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, to name just a few. You can help prevent this dilemma by encouraging physical activity, and you can participate, too, to keep yourself healthy. According to the National Institutes of Health, “about 17% of American children ages 2-19 are overweight.” As a parent, or other family member, there is a lot that you can do to help. In Trim Kids, the author states that children will keep with an exercise route if it is fun, starts slowly, there is initial success and they feel safe. There are a variety of different physical activities that can keep our children and teens both interested and in shape. The Center for Disease Control’s Web site is listed below, and has several suggestions, as well as links to additional information. You will find other helpful sites listed below. Richland County Public Library also has a lot of books to help you guide your child, or loved one, to a more active and healthy lifestyle. Most of the books are in the 613.7042 section, and keep in mind that we can help you find more resources, if you need them. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance! As always, check with your family doctor before starting any new exercise routine. Related Categories: |
