We've had a fantastic year and have many more exciting things planned. This year, the Friends of RCPL supported several events, including the nationally known Gee's Bend quilters, Pulitzer Prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson, the library’s annual storytelling festival A(ugusta) Baker's Dozen and The Literary Vine, our signature wine tasting event. But, that's not all; we are welcoming Pulitzer Prize winning columnist and author Leonard Pitts Jr. to the library in September.

I'm sure you know about our fantastic quarterly book sales that support the programs and initiatives of the library. But, do you know what we do with the books that do not sell? We have also donated books to the S.C. Hello Friends!

Another exciting Friends’ year is before us as we move into the fall, and there are a number of Friends’ events for you to take advantage of and show your support for our library. I hope many of you were able to attend our Annual Meeting featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author Leonard Pitts.  More than 300 Friends’ members attended, and that was just the beginning.

During October, the Historic Columbia Foundation will once again display Scarecrows in the Garden of the Robert Mills House. We are very excited about our display this year, the Headless Horseman scarecrow from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which won the grand prize in the business/organization category. Drop by this month and see our award-winning scarecrow. For more information visit, www.historiccolumbia.org.

And of course, it wouldn’t be October without another Friends’ Book Sale. Mark your calendars for October 14 when we open our doors from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for the Friends–Only Preview Sale. If you can’t make it Friday, we’ll be there bright and early Saturday at 9 a.m. I’ve been there with all of our dedicated volunteers over the past few weeks, and we’re stuffed to the gills with great books at bargain prices. What better way to get a jump on your holiday shopping! Come out, bring a friend or two and buy some books. Remember all proceeds go to help increase advocacy and awareness for the Richland County Public Library.
