Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr.!

On the third Monday of each January, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  It is a federal holiday and is one of only four that commemorate a single person. Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968 after years of nonviolent activism for civil rights. Many people choose to make this day a day of service, committing to doing projects that serve the community.

For more information, you may want to look at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Web site, listed below. On this Web site, you will find a variety of information, including how to register a project, find a project in need of your help or see additional resources for both individuals and organizations that are interested.

There is a large spectrum of opportunities that you may do on this day, including building a playground, arranging a health fair, bringing or serving meals to people or removing graffiti, to name just a few. Participation is open to anyone of any age, ability and background.
If you are looking for information about Martin Luther King himself, or about MLK Day, you’ve come to the right place! Richland County Public Library has a variety of resources for both children and adults, in several  mediums. You can see a short list below, but we have more. If you would like help finding an item to suit you or to get information about additional resources, just let us know. We are happy to help.
