In the 1960’s the building of a factory in the Mexican state of Tabasco unearthed ancient Mayan monuments among which was “Monument 6.” It was broken and scattered to four local Mexican museums, two private collections and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Text reconstruction by scholars who study the Maya gave it calendric significance. It helped spark the 2012 phenomenon and has been repeatedly cited since 1996.
The date December 21, 2012, coincides with the end of a 5,126 day Mayan cycle and the winter solstice. The Mayans were astronomers and mathematicians whose mysteries attract numerous viewpoints. Some believe in alternate dates such as September 2017 or July 8, 2022. There was a prediction for May 21, 2011 but we missed that one. Try some of these titles and pick your own theory:
