A Horse is a Horse

When I was a kid, like most little girls I was obsessed with horses.  I read all the classic horse books (My Friend Flicka, Misty of Chincoteague, The Black Stallion) which, of course, I checked out at my local library.  (The Landmark Square branch, and boy does that make me feel old!)  I took riding lessons for several years, and I'd love to be able to afford a horse of my own.  For the time being, however, I'll have to be satisfied with the horse magazines we get here at the library.  Luckily, we get a lot of them!

Horse Illustrated is our most general horse magazine.  It covers all breeds and disciplines, including dressage, trail riding, Western, rodeo events, and more.  Articles discuss equine health, grooming, and nutrition, and there's a lot of buying guide info as well.

Horse & Rider is targeted at the Western show enthusiast.  Highlights include tips on show outfits, training, gear, and more.

Western Horseman is also intended for the Western community, but it tends to focus more on rodeo events and working stock horses.  There are also feature articles on horses and people in the Western riding community and on cowboy culture.

Southeast Equine is a more regional publication, featuring breeders and farms in the southeastern states.  There's an article in the most recent issue about miniature donkeys, which I didn't even know existed five minutes ago but now realize are the cutest things I have ever seen in my life.  Seriously.  Miniature donkeys!  A highlight here is the regional event calendar.

Young Rider is aimed at kids from 8-15 and is the only equestrian magazine for kids.  There are profiles of young riders (famous and otherwise), tips for doing well at events, contests, and lots of articles about caring for horses.  It's quite a substantial magazine and reminds me of how responsible the young horsey set is.  Highly recommended.
