Internships: Could One Give You the Edge in the Job Market?

This post goes out to those of you that are still in school, or possibly just out of school. I’m almost certain I don’t have to tell you to think ahead to your future job search. In fact, I’m just going to assume that you’re already preparing. One thing that could set you ahead of your competition is an internship. Employers LOVE people that volunteer their time. It looks good to them, it gives you valuable work experience. It’s a win-win. Plus it’s just another thing that will make your resume seriously stand out in a crowd.

Employers can be wary about hiring someone fresh out of school because of their lack of experience. The less time it takes to train a person, the better, in their eyes. They want you to basically be able to hit the ground running. An internship affords you experience in your field that another candidate may not have. It indicates that you already have practical knowledge about your field and that you won’t need them to hold your hand through a lot of training. In today’s job market, it’s beneficial to have more than just theoretical classroom knowledge. You need to get your hands dirty as soon as possible, so to speak. You need to give yourself every edge that you possibly can in the job market and an internship is a fantastic way to do that.

Internships open up great networking opportunities. You will gain many contacts through volunteering that could potentially help you get a job later on. You will get references that will be able to convey your aptitude for the job.

So have I sold you on an internship yet? I hope so! Now you need to know how to locate an internship that will help you fulfill your career aspirations. Be mindful of deadlines. Many of them have fairly early deadlines. So the sooner you start looking for a position, the better.
