John Hope Franklin, 1915-2009

We recently lost a towering figure in African-American and American history.  The distinguished scholar, John Hope Franklin, died of congestive heart failure on March 25, 2009, at age 94.Franklin’s life and career are part of the fabric that makes this a remarkable country. Franklin authored several books, but undoubtedly the most noted is From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans.   You can find this and some other books by Franklin in RCPL’s collection. In 2005, his autobiography, Mirror to America:  the Autobiography of John Hope Franklin, was published.   Read or listen to an excerpt of an interview with Franklin from Duke University about his autobiography.

I was fortunate to hear Franklin speak as part of the Robert Smalls Lecture Series at the University of South Carolina in 2005. That was only four years ago which means he had to be 90 years old. He was truly a remarkable man who led a rich long life. If you would like to learn more about Dr. John Hope Franklin, checkout the PBS video First Person Singular: John Hope Franklin.
