Last week, a dear friend gave me a beautifully crocheted scarf. She makes hats, scarves and baby blankets for everyone she knows and keeps a collection of such items to donate to the needy in the winter.
My scarf is so soft, and the weight and length is just right. When I wear it, I hardly know that I have it on, and the warmth it provides is very much appreciated! I can knit, but I've never learned to crochet.
For those of us who do not have this skill, RCPL has some great books to get us started. The first book title that caught my eye is Crocheting in Plain English. The cover details promise "easy-to-follow lessons and patterns" and that this will be "the only book any crocheter will ever need," so this sounds like a great book to start with!
Also, Learning to Crochet is a much smaller book (only 80 pages,) and it offers an introduction to types of hooks and yarns, how to hold a hook, how to hold the yarn, and the basic stitches. The images are large and clear, so this will be another good choice.
Getting Started Crochet gives a little more detail on each topic, especially on yarn information, such as the weight of the yarn, and it has a great chart for the Standard Yarn Weight System. On page 38, there are instructions for "The Quintessential Scarf," described as an "easy-to-make scarf" pattern whose "simple stitch shows off a beautiful yarn. A large hook keeps the look relaxed and produces rapid results." That's for me! (And, the scarf does look great.)
For those of us who prefer to learn visually, try Teach Yourself Visually Crocheting. And perhaps even better, we have several s that give beginner instruction: I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting targets the beginner audience, and Crochet Stitches in Motion is for all skill levels, and features "stitch-along instructions in close up detail."
Working on your crochet project this winter will provide warmth for both body and mind, as well as for friends and family who may benefit from your creations. Who knows? Maybe your gift will inspire them to take up crocheting, just as my lovely scarf has!
