LinkedIn: Why You Should Be Using It and How to Use It

LinkedIn has over 8.5 million registered users. Some of the most high profile companies in the world have used this social network to find employees, including Microsoft, eBay, and Target. In fact, some companies search LinkedIn to find people with the skills they require and recruit them for positions. The unique thing about LinkedIn versus other social networks is that LinkedIn is geared specifically for business. It is a professional network. Also, LinkedIn doesn’t only consist of individual profiles. Companies have their own LinkedIn profiles. So you can also investigate a company you’re interested in working for to make sure you want to work for them. Isn’t the Internet grand?
LinkedIn is at the most basic a virtual resume. You can join groups relevant to your professional interests. The most important thing I can stress is to interact. Get involved in discussions. Build a strong network. You never know what sort of connections you will make in these groups. Networking is a HUGE part of finding a job. Now in terms of LinkedIn being a resume, there are certain overused buzzwords you should avoid putting on your profile (.i.e. “experience). You want your profile to stand our from hundreds of others the company could be looking at. LinkedIn is, of course, far more interactive than a traditional resume.
