Make or Break Time: The Job Interview (Part 2)

So, you got the interview! Go you! Once you get over that inevitable, overwhelmingly nervous feeling, breathe and start preparing to knock that hiring manager off of his (or her) feet. In order for you to get that job you’ve busted your tail writing that resume for (if you took my advice, that is), you must have a successful interview. Here are the three things you need to do to accomplish this:

1) Research
2) Practice
3) Confidence
4) Originality

When you go in to interview, you are selling yourself to that employer. To learn how to effectively market yourself in the interview, it is important to research the company. You want to go in knowing all that you can about the company so that you can ask questions. It is not going to look good if you have no questions for them about the company. They will interpret this as either lack of interest or lack of preparation. They will be impressed if you checked up on them prior to the interview.

I cannot stress enough to practice, practice, practice! No one liked hearing their parents say “practice makes perfect” but honestly, it is true. You will become more comfortable with the process and feel more confident. Confidence is critical. You want them to believe you can do the job as soon as you leave their office. The Job Center offers free practice interview services.

Finally, you will likely be confronted with all of the cliche interview questions, such as “Tell me about yourself.” Boring, yes. But it is how you respond to these questions that is important. Don’t give them the answers they’ve heard a thousand times before. Try to think of a unique way to respond while also proving that you’re the best person for the job.
