Platon's Photographs of Civil Rights Leaders
Submitted by Broadsheet on Tue, 02/23/2010 - 12:31pm
The current issue of the New Yorker, which happens to be the 85th anniversary issue, has a fantastic article on veterans of the civil rights movement. The article is accompanied by striking black and white photographs of people like the Little Rock Nine, John Lewis, Myrlie Evers, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos by Platon, a Greek-English staff photographer. Many of the photographs were also discussed when the photographer was interviewed on a recent episode of Charlie Rose. I really recommend that anybody interested in the photographs watch the interview, as Platon discusses his artistic process in depth and talks a lot about what it was like to photograph people who had sacrificed deeply for the Civil Rights cause. He takes most of his photographs lying on the ground to achieve the powerful look of his portraits, and he's scared and nervous every single time he takes a picture. It's a great interview and a great article. Related Categories: |
