The Promenade

A Room with a View

If you are already offering "board" to your backyard birds by providing them with seed and suet at feeder stations, you may also enjoy giving them "room" in the form of a cozy birdhouse, or nest box. In doing so, you will be helping out cavity-nesting birds who might otherwise have a hard time finding a good nesting spot in your yard. Many species found in South Carolina are cavity nesters, including chickadees, titmice, wrens, and woodpeckers. Birds will typically begin looking for a safe place to hatch and raise their young in the spring.

Birdhouses can be bought at specialty shops as well as at discount department stores that sell birdseed, or they can be built following a plan. Some people opt for fancy structures resembling a Swiss chalet or a castle, but all birds really need is a sturdy wooden box with a sloped roof, small holes for ventilation and drainage, and an entryway sized for the species of bird one wants to attract.

RCPL offers many books with birdhouse designs and plans. Just perform a Subject Keyword search using the term "birdhouses" for a list of relevant titles.
