Three Cups
Submitted by May on Thu, 05/07/2009 - 4:09pm
Three cups. Maybe even just two cups. I’ll be happy to harvest just two cups of green beans this year after battling the drought and the rabbits, just so that our grandsons can taste the pleasure of homegrown beans. They helped plant the beans earlier this spring; they haven’t been with us to hoe the weeds, but that can come later. The main thing is that they learn where the beans come from and gain some insight to the grand possibilities -- and realities -- of vegetable gardening. Did you ever garden as a child? The one thing I remember is hating the work, but loving the results. I also remember the cool soil beneath my feet, the sweet smell of the earth, and the quiet of the early morning as we worked in the garden. No radios, no traffic, just the occasional conversation between quiet thoughts. Those memories are ones that I’m now glad to have.
If you are gardening or thinking of gardening with children, we have some books that you’ll enjoy. Be sure to ask us for additional resources, too!
