Thriller - A National Treasure
Submitted by Hassie on Thu, 01/07/2010 - 4:32pm
On December 30th, 2009, The Library of Congress released a list of 25 motion pictures that will be placed on the National Film Registry for the year 2009. Among the films selected was Michael Jackson's music video for the song "Thriller." I believe this is the first time a music video has been added to the registry. Every year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to the registry that are considered "culturally, historically, or aesthetically" significant. Through selection, the National Film Preservation Board and Library of Congress work to ensure that these items are preserved for all time.
The registry was started by an act of Congress in 1989. There are currently 525 titles on the registry. Click here to learn more about the National Film Registry and to access selections from previous years. Several of the films selected this year are available for checkout from RCPL.
