A Time to Give Thanks

It is 1621 that has been credited as “The First Thanksgiving.” Did you know that Thanksgiving did not become a national holiday until 1863? Bearing that in mind, it might be hard to see 1621 as “The First Thanksgiving.”

In the book Giving Thanks, the reader can learn a lot about which food was eaten these first years of celebrating. The history behind the day is very fascinating, and with the inclusion of recipes with the history in this book, you’re bound to find helpful information inside! Listed below are other resources that you might find helpful to get more information, either about the history, customs, recipes, or decorations. In The Thanksgiving Book, you’ll find stories, poems, prayers and additional lore about Thanksgiving. You may even want to incorporate some of these items in your celebration.  The History Channel Web site has a few Thanksgiving videos that cover the origins, fun facts, and how football became integrated into Thanksgiving. That site is listed below, too.

In just a few short days, it will be Thanksgiving. The word Thanksgiving conjures up a variety of thoughts. For some people, it is a day to gorge on food and watch football. For others, it is a time to reflect on the things of which they are thankful.  Some people take the feasting option and instead fast, choosing to eat a very limited amount of food. There are many ways to celebrate Thanksgiving – what are YOU doing for this holiday?
