The Promenade

Two Wheels and a Chain

This past weekend, I attended the USA Pro Cycling Championship, in Greenville SC.  Saturday was individual time trials and on Sunday afternoon, there was a road race.  On Sunday morning, amateurs could go and ride the same course that the professionals would ride in the afternoon.

Do you remember being a kid and riding a bike, getting a sense of freedom?  Bicycles allowed us, as kids, to go farther than when we walked, and without having to wait on a parent or older sibling for a ride. We were, in a sense, free. Bicycles let you fly down a hill and soar up the other side.  They can still do that.  We can bike for fun, for exercise, or as an escape.

So let's all enjoy the freedom that bicycles can provide, and let RCPL help, if you need it.  We have books on repairing bicycles, as well as riding bicycles.  Some items are listed below, but most bike books can be found at 796.6 or for bike repair, 629.2272.

We also have novels and biographies about cycling.  Whether you're new to cycling, returning, or are a serious cyclist, young or old, Richland County Public Library is sure to have something for you!

You may also want to take a look at SC bicycle laws or safety tips, both from the SCDOT's Web site. ï»¿ï»¿

We don't have to be as fast as the people I saw racing this weekend to have fun or get some exercise.  Dust off the bike in your garage, pump up the tires, and put on your helmet -- you'll be glad you did!
