What Color to Paint?

What Color to Paint
I'm so confused about paint colors! I've noticed on the home makeover shows, that if the walls are off-white, the designer wants to make them more colorful and if the walls are colorful the designer wants to "neutralize" them and make them less colorful. I guess it all boils down to personal choice. The books listed in the blog, sound like a good way to get started, whatevever color direction you decide to take.
Hard To Tell
The color always looks so different after it dries. I know I'm supposed to get a small can, take it home, paint a swatch and look at the color in different light for a few days, but I'm just too impatient for that.
Testing colors
I hate to admit it, but I tested some new paint colors on the wall behind the door of my hall bathroom. That was 7 months ago...I should probably pick a color already. :)
