Run with the Horsemen

Review:
"Run with the Horsemen" is a novel about young Porter Osborne Jr., growing up on a farm "between the wars" in Georgia. Porter, referred to as "the boy," is the only boy in a family of girls. His extended family consists of aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents, all of whom add character and drama to a mischievous boy's simple life. Porter experiences life in the giant shadow of his father, with the loving tutelage of his regal mother, under the watchful eye of his wise and wonderful paternal grandmother. Sams organizes each word in perfect order to create vivid pictures of a boy's joy and vitality for life. He fashions "Run with the Horsemen" after his own experiences of community and family. "Run with the Horsemen" is a story that I hoped would continue as the last page was turned; and so it has. Sams continues the story of young Porter in "The Whisper of the River," and finishes this wonderful trilogy with "When All the World Was Young."
